West Falls Church Metro is one of the busiest construction corridors in Northern Virginia and soon will be busier. Rushmark Properties, EYA and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority recently announced they are partnering on a new project, a 24-acre tract for mixed-use development in West Falls Church.

The new project will ultimately include up to 1 million square feet of residential, office and retail space. A groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the initial phase of work took place at the proposed site located on Falls Church Drive. The development will include 305 multi-family units to open in 2028. 82 townhomes will open by 3rd quarter 2027, and a second phase will include a 266-unit, multi-family building in 2029.

W.B. Hopke was awarded the wet utilities project in October 2025 and will begin the initial phase in December 2025. The scope of work includes water, sanitary and storm, and the expected completion date for their work is 2027. Hopke is one of many subcontractors, under the management of general contractor, HITT Contracting Inc. Metro station access during the project will continue and be maintained, shifting access around to avoid work areas.

For Hopke, sanitary includes the installation of over 6,000 LF of sanitary pipe, 26 manholes as deep as 15ft. Storm installation requires over 3,000 LF of storm pipe, 60 storm structures, and three StormTech stormwater detention systems. Water requires over 3,000 LF of water pipe.

There will be some challenges with this type of project, especially based on the location. Hopke project manager, David Steger said, “The project schedule will require multiple crews working in a busy area, maintaining access to the active metro stop, and sequencing work areas with other trades also working at the site.”

Hopke has an experienced management team on this project, beginning with Estimator, Dillon McCoy, Project Manager, David Steger and Superintendent, Tommy Kennedy. The rest of the team will be announced soon.
