Hopke recently completed the first phase of construction of Cardinal Elementary School, previously known as Reed Elementary School in Arlington, VA. The first phase of this net zero school project involved the construction of a new 110,000 SF elementary school and the second phase of the project will include the construction of two large precast stormwater detention systems under the school’s playing fields. Hopke is working for Gilbane Building Company for both phases of the school project. Phase 1 scope included 550+ LF of sanitary main, 1900+ LF of storm main with 40 structures, a Jellyfish stormwater treatment structure, a 60” HDPE detention system, and 280+ LF of water main. Phase 2 scope includes the installation of a precast stormwater detention system with 477,775 CF of water storage capacity made up of 670 pieces and a second precast stormwater detention system with 54,745 CF of water storage capacity made up of 78 pieces.
