W.B. Hopke Team Completes 11th and Vermont Wet Utilities Project in Arlington, Virginia

December 8, 2025 | W.B. Hopke Co. | Completed Projects

W.B. Hopke completed work for the 11th and Vermont wet utilities project in Arlington, VA. The first mobilization of work began in April of 2023 and concluded in October 2024. Overseen by general contractor Donohoe Construction Company, Hopke’s role was to do all the sanitary, water and storm installation. The project included the installation of two (2) sanitary services, (1) 8″ fire service, (1) 4′ water service and precast concrete meter vault, (1) fire hydrant, ~340 feet of storm pipe (15″ RCP and 6″ PVC underdrain pipe) and associated precast concrete structures/cleanouts. W.B. Hopke connected several building planter drains to storm mains. They also installed Contech StormFilters inside a cast-in-place concrete vault.

Regarding the challenges faced on this project, Hopke project manager, Mike Fiebert said, “There were several challenges. In particular, the work was performed in very tight quarters with limited access in and out of the jobsite in Arlington, VA. Scheduling was a challenge because it required coordination with other trades on the project and neighboring properties. Multiple mobilizations were required.” Fiebert continued, “The existing water main that we had to tie-in to for the fire service, also fed a hospital on the neighboring property. So, to minimize any obstruction to the hospital, the line could only be shutdown at night for us to complete our work. It also involved a lengthy coordination process with the county. Another obstacle related to a 4″ water meter vault that had to be installed by crane, and this involved a full closure of N Vermont Street,” said Fiebert. Mike added, “This small site proved to be a large challenge, but we persevered and with the assistance of some good County inspectors, we were able to complete the project on time and budget.”
