W.B. Hopke Begins Work on Sanitary, Storm and Water for Midline Block C Townhomes in Reston, VA

May 24, 2023 | W.B. Hopke Co. | Job Highlights

In January 2023, W.B. Hopke broke ground for a new wet utilities project located at 1830 Michael Faraday Drive in Reston, VA. The project, named Midline Block C, is part of a larger planned residential four block community, office and retail project that will eventually include eight buildings, 1058 dwelling units, 259,845 square feet of office space and 251,150 square feet of retail space.

As subcontractor to general contractor Pleasants Construction for the EYA project, W.B. Hopke will install sanitary, storm and water lines, including two large Bayfilters to support 80 new townhomes at Midline Block C. The wet utilities project is scheduled to last several months and should be completed by late July 2023.

Paul Cloutier, Senior Project Manager with Hopke, shared some details about the Midline Block C project which is currently about 50-60% complete.

The scope of the project includes 600 LF of sanitary main, over 1000 LF of sanitary laterals, 500 LF of storm piping, 8 storm structures, 2 large Bayfilters, and 400 LF of water main. The Bayfilters will be set using a crane.

“We have already installed the sanitary lines which connects to the existing sanitary main. The existing main was deep, about 17 to 18′. We are in the process of installing the water lines next. The storm will be installed last and will connect at about 7′ deep,” Mr. Cloutier said.

“This is a routine type of project for Hopke and not expected to provide any serious challenges. There are two large Bayfilters specified by the architects for this project. Both Bayfilters are huge and installed in precast concrete. One Bayfilter holds 9 cartridges and the other Bayfilter holds 4 cartridges. The Bayfilters treat the storm water as it flows away from the buildings. They remove pollutants, total suspended solids, metals, etc. and control the water flow from the townhomes. They are cleaned out every six months or so depending on use. One Bayfilter is located on the east side of the buildings and the other is located on the northeast side of the buildings,” said Mr. Cloutier.

W.B. Hopke would like to thank the client, the general contractor and all those that made this project possible, especially Paul Cloutier, senior project manager, our estimator Charlie McClellan, superintendent Manuel Bonilla, foreman Roberto Gonzalez and the crew Raul Vasquez, Jeovany Contreras, Miguel Cruz, Fredrick Oliver and Ray Raquan.
