Hopke Completes Robinson Landing Project in Old Town Alexandria in 2021

To many living in Old Town Alexandria today, the residences at Robinson Landing, situated on the banks of the Potomac River, is a condominium complex with unprecedented panoramic waterfront views, wide open living spaces and expansive windows. It boasts a waterfront promenade, a scenic pier, and landscaped parks. It also connects Old Town’s storied past with a bright and modern future.

Robinson Terminal Warehouse, now located in Springfield, VA, was originally founded by Clarence J. Robinson in 1939 and situated in Old Town Alexandria near where Robinson Landing stands today. It was a location where cargo was unloaded from seagoing craft in the river onto flatbottomed steamboats and carried up to Fort Yuma and points further north on the river from 1852 onward. The area is ripe with history and became the site and focal point where archaeologists uncovered several 18th Century ships, a warehouse and a mill buried below years of city development projects.

The Robinson Landing Project, located at 310 Strand Street, Alexandria, VA, was important to Hopke because of the historic significance and the archaeologists’ work which often coincided with the work Hopke was required to complete for Robinson Landing. In fact, there were numerous delays because of the frequent work being done by the archaeologists to excavate the ships. There were also two different contracts – one for EYA and the other with Donohoe general contractors. Hopke started their work in the winter of 2018 and wrapped up their work in 2020-2021 timeframe. The project included typical wet utility construction, as well as re-use of an old floating wharf that became a bar/restaurant. The services Hopke provided were challenging because of the location and the archaeological importance.

A special thank you to project manager, Paul Cloutier and Superintendent, Brian Starnes for overseeing this important project.
